Plasma Sodium Levels and Cardiovascular Stability in Hemodialysis Patiens
Introduction
A relationship betwen pre-hemodialysis (HD) plasma sodium and mortality has been described.
Patients with lower levels of sodium preHD have an increased risk adjusted of death.
There is a tendency to reduce mortality when dialyzed with Dialysate Sodium (DNa) above 140 mEq / L.
Conclusion
-
Patients with the lowest predialysis Sodium levels showed larger interdialysis weight gain and higher ultrafiltration rate than other groups. Intradialysis hypotension was most frequent in this group.
-
The predialysis serum Sodium level was negatively correlated with the ultrafiltration rate (moderate association), percent interdialysis weight gain (poor association) and percent sessions with hypotension (poor association).
-
These findings suggest a relationship between hyponatremia, hypervolemia and higher risk of intradialysis hypotension.
